Australia TFN

Tax File Number

What is Tax File Number

If you plan to live and work in Australia, either for long time or just temporarily, you should apply for the Tax File Number (TFN). It enables you to lower your yearly taxes and apply for federal benefits. TFN is also required to file taxes electronically or to start a business.

You can consider it as an Australian alternative to the Individual Taxpayer Identification, or Social Security number.

How to apply for the TFN

Compared to other countries and other official processes, getting your Tax File Number is very easy. The registration process is similar for both, Australia citizens and non-Australians. In both cases you only need to complete a form through an agency or the official Australia taxation office website.

Non-Australians

  1. First you need work or student visa, or any other visa allowing you to stay indefinitely in Australia
  2. Complete the registration form
  3. You will receive your TFN within 28 days to your address

Australians

  1. Complete the registration form
  2. Print the received PDF document
  3. Bring the printed document for an interview at the Australia post office within 28 days of completing the form

Who needs TFN?

The Australian Tax File Number is not mandatory for anyone. However you will have to pay higher taxes, won’t be able to file your taxes online, you won’t receive any federal benefits and you won’t be allowed to start a business in Australia. That’s why we always recommend getting your TFN as soon as possible.

The good thing is that TFN never expires, even if you move abroad temporarily. So you will not have to apply for it again.

Who can apply for TFN?

Any foreigner with valid passport, valid Australian work/student/permanent visa and who is already in Australia. Or any Australian and New Zealand citizen.

The only valid work permits include:

  • Working holiday (subclass 417)
  • Entertainment (subclass 420)
  • Sport (subclass 421)
  • Work and holiday (subclass 462)
You can also apply for TFN if you:
  • receive income from an Australian source other than interest, dividends or royalty payments
  • your spouse is an Australian resident and is applying for Family Tax Benefit
  • you are member of Australian superannuation fund expecting to receive a bonus from it, intending to make a personal contribution, or there are some contributions on your behalf
  • need an Australian business number (ABN), or to lodge an Australian tax return

*We are not processing the TFN application, the link above leads to our partner, tax specialist company, processing the official tax file number registration on your behalf, not the government website. However the tax number you are going to receive, is the official document issued by the government.
